I have been debating talking about nutrition and fitness on my blog, because I don't have any certification in either nutrition or fitness. That being said, those two subjects are things that I am passionate about. So I decided to bite the bullet and open up a tab on these very important subjects, since they are part of health and wellness.

Since a few years ago, I have growingly been interested in superfoods and foods that aren't typically talked about in mainstream nutrition, but are amazing for their healing properties. For example, I love spirulina and chlorella, which are cyanobacteria and blue-green algae. Sounds pretty gross, I know. But I will elaborate on why I choose to nourish myself with these superfoods.

Here are my 5 not-so-popular superfoods that I love to incorporate in my diet :

Spirulina

Spirulina is a cyanobacteria in powder form. It contains 68% protein (a vegan source of protein). It's high in iron, and is a powerful blood detoxifyer. It has 4x more antioxidants than blueberries and is known to fight liver disease and cancer. I personally don't like the taste of it, so I buy empty vegetable capsules and fill them with the powder, so I can take spirulina as a supplement.

Chlorella

Chlorella is similar to spirulina, as it is a blue-green powder, but it is a form of algae. Chlorella is known to be an amazing heavy metal detoxifyer, and is even great to detoxify radiation and chemotherapy. It is known to lower your blood sugar and cholesterol. Again, the taste isn't so great, so you can often find these as capsules or tablets to swallow as a form of supplementation.

Cacao Nibs

Cacao nibs is basically raw chocolate. It is very bitter, but super good for your body. It's known to prevent cardiovascular disease and help with weight loss. It is a great antioxidant and is also great with naturally boosting mood. You can find them at any health store. My favourite way to consume them is to sprinkle them on some greek yogourt, add banana, chia seeds and natural almond butter.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a very popular powder used in ayurvedic medecine. It is known to relieve stress, help treat arthritis, and even treat depression. Ashwaganda is great for immunity and helps regulate cortisol levels. I normally have it mixed with hot water, and drink it as a tea to help my digestion.

MCT oil

Last but not least, MCT oil. MCT oil is derived from coconut oil, but is much healthier. It is tasteless, and is great to help burn your fat storage. It helps regulate appetite, boosts energy and endurance, which is why a lot of people use it as a fitness supplement. I usually put some MCT oil right in my coffee, and it creates a creamy texture.

Those are my top 5 superfoods. I have other ones that I could have added, but that will be for a different post. Let me know if you are familiar with any of these, and what your take on it is!
